Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
