Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
