Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
