A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
